Passing the Gavel

In June 2022, members of the NSCDA-MN Board of Managers met and at that meeting, the Society’s historic gavel was present. The inscription on the gavel reads: “Presented to Minnesota Colonial Dames by Eliza Newport April 27, 1896. Wood from elm tree in Independence Square, Philadelphia. Presented to her by Colonel George Morgan Present 1st Court of Judicature in the N. W. Territory.” For 115 years this gavel has passed through the hands of 33 Minnesota Society Presidents. Now it is in the hands of the 34th - very capable hands indeed!

Members pictured are (Back L to R): Nancy Lindley, Katharine Winston, Sandy Hull, Ann Essling, Lucy Shepard, Tammis McMillan. (Front L to R): Kitty Petit (holding gavel), Lois Mackin, incoming President, NSCDA-MN.
