2022 Scholarship Awards

In the spring of 2022, we awarded $7,000 each to three students. With guidance from our criteria, the University chose the following students:

Adaolisa Ezechukwu is a Master of Nursing Student from Nigeria. Prior to coming to the University of Minnesota, Adaolisa worked in the Ministry of Health in Nigeria. She was part of deployment teams for the prevention and management of infectious diseases throughout the country. She witnessed the importance of nurses in this effort and states “the current pandemic revealed that there are never enough nurses in my country”. She will graduate in Fall 2022 and return to Nigeria with her three children to pursue a career in public health nursing. She will bring a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to her practice of caring for communities in rural Nigeria.

Shohgo Motoyama is a sports management master’s student in the College of Education and Human Development. As an ethnic Korean born in Japan, Shohgo knows first-hand the struggles of being accepted into society when you are born an outsider. Through the lens of sport opportunities, he plans to develop a curriculum to educate all people in Japan about diversity and shared values. Through an internship with the St. Paul Saints, he has honed his research skills and intends on making innovative contributions to sports management to contribute to increased wellbeing for all people in Japan. Shohgo will graduate in Spring 2022.

Alecia Finateri is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student from Canada. Her dream is to return to Canada and provide veterinary services to an underserved region of the country where many residents travel up to three hours one way for care. In addition to the critical role veterinarian play in public health, medical research, disease surveillance, and environmental and food sustainability, Alecia is passionate about the increase in quality of life and mental health provided by the human-animal bond. Alecia has gained experience in nearly every aspect of veterinary care by volunteering with the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, Veterinary Urgent Care and Pharmacy, and Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance team. She graduates in Spring 2022.

The University of Minnesota’s International Student Scholarship office has created a YouTube video of 2022 scholarship recipients features Adaolisa, Alecia and Shogho among other scholarship recipients. It can be viewed here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHn_aFZPRhg&t=5s
